Online safety when using ManxPACT in an unsafe situation

We understand that it might not always feel safe when you’re looking for support on ManxPACT. This might include:

  • living with someone who makes you feel unsafe

  • you feel at risk of harm from someone

  • someone you don’t feel safe with has access to your phone/device and you’re worried about them finding out that you’ve used ManxPACT to get support

Here are five tips to help keep you safe online when using ManxPACT in an unsafe situation.

1. Click the hide button for a quick exit.

You can find our ‘HIDE PAGE’ button at the bottom of each page which lets you quickly exit the ManxPACT site if you need to. Clicking this button will instantly take you to a Google homepage.

2. Clear your browsing history.

It’s possible for someone with access to your device to click back, or look at your browsing history to see the sites you’ve visited online. If you need help clearing your history, search ‘clear browser history’ in your search engine to find out how.

3. Set up private browsing.

Private browsing means your device won’t save your internet search history. The way you do this will be different depending on your device, so it can be helpful to search ‘how to set up private browsing on [type your device name/model]’.

4. Think carefully about your passwords

Making sure nobody else knows your passwords can be a good way to make sure no one else can login to your online accounts. This might be something you think about at a time when you feel safe and are not in any immediate danger.

5. Use someone else’s device.

If it doesn’t feel safe to use your device to look at certain sites, or to find information, using the device of someone else you trust could be a safer alternative. If this doesn’t feel possible, safe public places such as libraries often have internet access for free or for a small charge.
